Cary’s 32nd birthday was last Thursday, and she has been treated to no less than three cakes (well, one of them was a pie) in celebration of said birthday
(EDIT: I’ve been reminded that in fact, counting the pie, Cary has been given five cakes. I forgot about the two angel food cakes her mom and grandmother made for her).
I decided that for her party this weekend, I would make a cake as well, but I wanted to do something different. I used cake mix rather than make the cake from scratch so I could focus on the decoration.
Cary wanted to have a presidential themed party, since Obama’s inauguration was only a few days away. Since she’s a fan of the President Elect, I chose to make an Obama cake.
This was the first time I had ever tried to make fondant icing, and I think it turned out pretty well. I made marshmallow fondant instead of gelatin fondant, because a) Cary loves marshmallows, and b) it’s easier to make. Marshmallow fondant is really just marshmallows and powdered sugar (with some shortening thrown in during the process to keep the marshmallow from sticking to hands and work surfaces). Marshmallow fondant also tastes better than gelatin fondant, so, win win.
I ended up making WAY too much fondant, so I’ve got quite a bit left I can use for something else, whatever that may be. I learned a few things from my first fondant cake attempt, so I think the next one I make will be a little cleaner and more polished.
But everyone seemed to like the finished product:
Especially the birthday girl:
The logo itself isn’t perfect, but at least it’s recognizable. I didn’t expect the fondant to be so stretchy. Pulling the cut pieces of fondant off the counter tended to distort them a little, so there was some re-working required once I put the individual strips on the cake. I think the colors in particular worked out really well. I didn’t expect to get such vibrant red and blue, but that Wilton food coloring is good stuff.
