There are a few teachers in my past that I’ve wanted to contact to thank them for the guidance they showed me in school.
Every teacher I’ve had in school has had some sort of positive influence on my life, but a few stand out.
One particular teacher was my high school AP English teacher. Mrs. Murphy was a tiny lady, small in sature but with a room-filling presence. I don’t know how old she was at the time…maybe in her early 30′s. She had a real passion for teaching, and encouraged creativity. I don’t know how most students regarded her, but I liked her. Every grading period, we were required to complete 20 journal entries for a journal notebook. The entries could be about literally anything. They could be diary-style true stories, art, fiction or stream-of-consciousness paragraphs. I know one guy who killed a fly, taped it to his paper and wrote about it, and she liked it. Mrs. Murphy opened a lot of doors. She seemed to like my writing a lot and encouraged me to write as often as possible.
At the end of each grading period, we spent at least one entire class making a book. Mrs. Murphy had a cabinet full of wallpaper swatch books, and we would select swatches and use them as the covers for our books. We could fill our books with expanded journal entries or make something up specifically for the book. Seems like a rather jeuvenile activity for high school seniors, but I always liked arts & crafts, anyway.
When I graduated, Mrs. Murphy gave me an Oxford Dictionary of English Usage. I still have it and use it.
Mrs. Murhpy kindled a fondness for creative writing in me, and I wish I could tell her how much I appreciate it.
So wherever you are, Mrs. Murphy, thank you.
