One of the most influential science fiction authors of the 20th century has died. While he was an accomplished author, Clarke’s most important contribution to science was his idea that satellites in a geostationary orbit would make ideal communications devices. The geostationary orbit is often called the Clarke orbit in his honor.

2001 is arguably one of the most important science fiction works of the last century, but it is only one story in a body of work that spans 50 years.

He will be missed.
